It started with a pond, a soggy dachshund, and a coat I refused to put anywhere near my washing machine.

In 2020, our dog Ted came home from a walk having found the one puddle (that was more like a pond) in Worcestershire that smelled awful. His coat was ruined and rather than let it anywhere near my washing machine, I decided as I had nothing else to do, that I'd get out my Husband's late Mum's sewing machine and made him a new one myself.

I posted a photo on Facebook and within days other dog owners were asking if I could make one for their dog too. So I did. Someone suggested I open a small Etsy shop and the orders didn't stop.

At the time, I'd just lost most of my work as a professional violinist to the pandemic, I remember almost overnight every performance, every booking, was gone. Hugo and Ted began in my spare bedroom almost as much out of necessity as love, as I needed something to occupy myself with. Within three months we'd outgrown the spare room and moved into our first unit. Within a year, I was able to offer three seamstresses full time work.

We're still a small team today, nestled in the Worcestershire countryside but within a family-feeling working estate. We still design, cut and hand-make every piece ourselves - jumpers, coats, harnesses, beds and slings, made to measure for every breed, shape and size, because that's the problem we started out solving: dogs whose bodies don't fit off the shelf.

We're careful with what we make, too. Every fabric remnant becomes a rope toy, a snuffle mat or bedding rather than waste. Our fabrics are UK-sourced and OEKO-TEX certified, our packaging is plastic-free, and everything is built to last rather than to be thrown away - the opposite of fast fashion, for dogs and their humans alike.

Hugo (black and tan, opinionated, terrible at sharing toys) and Ted (cream, professionally asleep, the reason any of this exists) still run the place - and these days they're doing it as big brothers too, to Toby and Lenny, the newest hoomans in the family.
