How to Choose the Right Size for a Made to Measure Dog Coat
Aktie
With made to measure dog clothing, size isn't a label - it's a set of measurements unique to your dog. Here's how to make sure you're ordering exactly the right fit, every time.
Why Sizing Works Differently for Made-to-Measure
Standard dog clothing uses S, M, L and XL labels based on average breed proportions. The problem? Dogs don't read size charts. A stocky Cocker Spaniel and a lean one can differ by several inches in chest girth alone - and that difference matters enormously when it comes to comfort and movement.
At Hugo and Ted, we don't use generic sizes (unless you want one of our Ready to Ship clothing items which are curated from our all-time most popular sizes!).
Every piece is made to the measurements you provide, which means the fit is tailored to your dog - not an average.

Step One: Take Your Measurements First
Before you think about sizing, you'll need three key measurements:
- Back length - base of neck to base of tail
- Chest girth - widest point around the chest with two fingers between the tape and body
- Neck girth - around the base of the neck roughly where the collar sits

Step Two: Understand Ease and Fit
Raw measurements alone don't tell the whole story. The ease - the extra room built into a garment beyond your dog's body measurements - determines whether a coat feels snug, relaxed, or oversized.
At Hugo and Ted, ease is built into every pattern. Here's what to expect across our different styles:
Fitted styles (jumpers and fleeces)
A small amount of ease for a close, neat fit. Ideal for active dogs or those who dislike bulky clothing. Your chest girth measurement should be taken with two fingers of ease already included.
Relaxed styles (coats and waterproofs)
More ease for layering over a jumper or fleece, and for freedom of movement on walks. If your dog runs hot or is particularly active, a relaxed fit is usually more comfortable.
Snuggle sacks and beds
Sizing here is based on your dog's length and weight rather than girth, it's important to check sizing to ensure your dog will fit comfortably inside. Product pages will specify which measurements to use.
Step Three: Consider Your Dog's Shape
Some breeds have proportions that fall outside typical patterns — and made-to-measure is where they benefit most.
- Deep-chested breeds (Greyhounds, Whippets, Lurchers) - large chest girth relative to back length. Standard sizing almost never fits well.
- Long-bodied breeds (Dachshunds, Basset Hounds) - need extra back length and often also depth in the chest size.
- Barrel-chested breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs) - wide chest and short neck require careful neck and chest measurements.
- Slim, leggy breeds (Salukis, Italian Greyhounds) - very fine-boned; ease must be carefully calibrated to avoid a baggy fit.
If your dog falls into any of these categories, simply provide your measurements as normal - our patterns are adjusted to suit.
Step Four: Choosing Between Styles
Once you have your measurements, browse by style to find the right piece:
- Dog Fleeces and Jumpers - ideal for everyday warmth; fitted styles that layer well under a coat.
- Waterproof Dog Coats - relaxed fit designed to go over a base layer or harness; great for British weather.
- Dog Clothing - the full range, including seasonal and occasion pieces.
Each product page includes specific guidance on which measurements to submit at checkout.

What If I'm Between Sizes?
With made to measure, there are no 'between sizes' - you simply provide your dog's measurements and we work from there. If you're unsure about anything, get in touch before ordering. We'd rather take a moment to help you get it right than have you receive something that doesn't fit perfectly.
A Note on Puppies and Growing Dogs
If your dog is still growing, we'd recommend waiting until they've reached close to their adult size before ordering a made to measure coat. Alternatively, order with a little extra ease and note this when placing your order - we can advise on the best approach for your breed.
