How to Choose the Right Size Dog Sling
Share
If you've been trying to measure your dog to find the right sling size, stop - you don't need to. At Hugo and Ted, our sling sizing is based on you, not your dog. The size you choose determines the strap length and depth of the sling, which affects where your dog sits on your body and how comfortable it is for you to carry them.
Here's everything you need to know to choose the right size first time.
Why Sling Sizing Is Human-Based
Our slings are designed to be worn across your body like a cross-body bag. The strap length determines how high or low your dog sits, and the depth of the sling determines how snugly they're held. A longer strap means your dog sits lower; a shorter strap means they sit higher and closer to your chest.
All of our slings are suitable for dogs under 10kg (our Petite size is designed for dogs under 7kg). So as long as your dog is within that weight range, the size you choose is really about your height, your clothing size, and your carrying preference.
The Hugo and Ted Sling Size Guide
| Sling Size | Strap Length | Depth | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petite | 40–42 inches | Approx. 15 inches | Dogs under 7kg · Smaller frames · If you prefer your dog to sit higher |
| Standard | 44–46 inches | Approx. 16 inches | Dogs under 10kg · Our most popular size |
| Long Strap | 48–50 inches | Approx. 16 inches | Dogs under 10kg · Taller frames (over 5'10") or UK size 16/L+ · If you prefer your dog to sit lower |
| Standard Summer Light-Weight | 35–37 inches | Approx. 12 inches | Dogs under 10kg · Smaller frames · Thin, stretchy fabric - size accounts for stretch |
| Long Strap Summer Light-Weight | 39–41 inches | Approx. 12 inches | Dogs under 10kg · Taller frames (over 5'10") or UK size 16/L+ · If you prefer your dog to sit lower |
All sizes are a recommendation based on our experience. As all slings are handmade, sizing is as accurate as possible but does not account for fabric stretch.
How to Choose Your Size
Step 1 - Check your dog's weight.
All Hugo and Ted slings are suitable for dogs under 10kg. If your dog is under 7kg, the Petite is also an option if you prefer a snugger, higher carry.
Step 2 - Consider your height and clothing size.
If you're over 5'10" or typically wear a UK size 16/L or above, go for a Long Strap option - the extra length ensures the sling sits comfortably on your body rather than pulling tight.
Step 3 - Think about where you want your dog to sit.
Prefer your dog close to your chest? Choose a shorter strap (Petite or Standard). Prefer them to sit lower and more to the side? Go for a Long Strap.
Step 4 - Consider the season.
Our Summer Light-Weight slings use a thin, stretchy fabric - perfect for warmer months. Because the fabric stretches, the strap lengths are shorter than our fleece slings to compensate.
